COMMUNITY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Ventura, CA

Located in the beautiful coastal city of Ventura, CA this six-story 360,000sq.ft., $285million building will host 250 patient rooms, 10 ORs, a 37 bed ER and large radiology suite. The sandy soil with liquefaction potential required improvement to a depth 85ft and soil/cement mix columns were utilized. While that helped provide a stable bearing surface the 22ft wide by 6ft thick spread footings still required tension piles to accommodate the massive overturning forces. The basement shear walls were up to 3ft thick and supported the concrete pan-joist first floor. Resisting tension loads over 4000kips the brace frame column base plates are monstrous. The largest has (6) 3.75in anchor embed 7ft into the concrete column cage below. The above grade structure consists of composite metal deck on steel framing. The lateral resistance is provided by SCBF with some braces using HSS14x0.625 pipes.

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO - GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

This project comprised the structural steel-and-glazing of the New Winter Garden at the Chicago Graduate School of Business. The imposing columns and soaring arches of the Winter Garden are reminiscent of traditional Gothic architecture of the campus. Each column is composed of eight steel pipes, 60ft high. Each of the four arches span a width of 50ft and are curved to three different radii. As the pipes fan out their diameter tapers from 8" at the base to 4" towards the top. The steel structure of each funnel was entirely assembled in a jig on the ground and lifted into position in one piece.
